Nov. 7 - 50 years after the first Trabant car was produced in former East Germany, it's attained cult status and is still a nice little earner. The car was intended as a communist version of the Volkswagen Beetle, but was built on the cheap, had a top speed of around 100 kilometers per hour and was hardly altered before production halted in 1991. But since German reunification, the Trabi, as it's affectionately known in Germany, has won over legions of new fans and there are many fan clubs devoted to the two-cylinder car. And a business which lets people drive a Trabi around Berlin or Dresden is still a hit with tourists and Germans alike. Joanna Partridge reports. SOUNDBITE: Mario Sobotta, "Trabi Safari" Driver, saying: (German) "The Trabant is usually well-received, people laugh, they take lots of photos, sometimes people screw up their noses as the petrol-oil mixture the car runs on produces a fairly unpleasant smell."
