Sony is loaning Playstation Vita dev kits to indie developers, and Nintendo will be bringing "updated" NES and GBA games to the 3DS eShop.SHOW NOTES: Story 1: There has been a lot of talk about how gaming handhelds will fair in an age of smartphones and mobile games. Well it looks like if you're Sony, you make it easy for indie developers to make games for your system. According to a story on Gamasutra, Sony has been lending development kits for it's upcoming Playstation Vita handheld to indie developers free of charge. Paul Johnson, managing director of indie studio Rubicon has confirmed that Sony has lent them the kits, and they are planning to port their iOS game "Great Little War Game" to the system. He said "They really do seem to have gotten behind smaller developers, based on my own experience and from talking with other small devs, and I think they should be saluted for it." I have to agree, and I think that this, along with their Pub Fund initiative might go a long way to making their new handheld stand out, and maybe even make it a must purchase. http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/36275/Sony_Generous_Enough_To_Loan_Vita_Dev_Kits_To_Indies.php Story 2: When Nintendo announced their "Ambassador Program" for the 3DS, there was curious line in the press release that pointed to "updated versions" of classic games that would be coming to the system. Nintendo has elaborated on what that means, and what it means could be pretty awesome. According to a report, many classic NES games from the past will be given added features that include "multiplayer simultanious play". These classic releases won't have 3D conversions like the release of Excitebike that came out earlier this summer, but with titles including "Super Mario Bros.", "Donkey Kong Jr.", and "The Legend of Zelda", it is still pretty impressive. We mentioned on Monday that the 3DS has had some troubles of late, but it is things like this that will go a long way to maybe turning around the fortunes of Nintendo's handheld powerhouse. http://ds.ign.com/articles/118/1184729p1.html That will do it for your daily dose of Press Pause.
