Who wins? YOU do. Here's your ringside seat to—among other scenes—a boisterous bout between two beautiful buxom babes (fighting over a man) in the Universal Picture "Yankee Pasha" (1954). This above-average adventure film features a determined, Romantic hero—Jason Starbuck—played with authority by swarthy Jeff Chandler; an auburn-haired damsel-in-distress—Roxana Reil—portrayed with verve by the skilled and attractive Rhonda Fleming; and a pouty, strutting, "cackling" harem girl—Lilith—played by busty blonde bombshell Mamie Van Doren. Billed as Bart Roberts, actor Rex Reason breathes menace into the villainous Omar Id-Din, who "enslaves" Roxana and opposes Starbuck. Another notable cast member—although not featured in this video's clips—is the consistently superb actor Lee J. Cobb, who makes a most credible Sultan. Also contributing (with dialogue lines) is actress Lisa Gaye, sister to actress Debra Paget. The story in brief: man meets woman in America; man loses woman to pirates at sea; man seeks woman; man locates woman in Morocco, man overcomes numerous obstacles to regain woman; man and woman return together in triumph to America. Perhaps the greatest claim of "Yankee Pasha" to your attention—without discounting the presence and attraction of beautiful women and a dashing hero—is its dramatization in action of the extent to which a man will go to regain a precious value—Jeff Chandler's Starbuck crosses the Atlantic Ocean and risks his life continuously to win back Rhonda Fleming's Roxana. THAT is Romantic entertainment. Another plus: although Fleming's Roxana is physically in need of rescue, spritually she is neither needy nor beholden. You may ask: "what about Fleming vs. Van Doren?" Well, although it ain't the film's main event, the confrontation does occur and will surely prove diverting to all fans of face-slapping, throat-grabbing, body-hugging cat fighting.
