Red Cross Director of Social Strategy Wendy Harman reflects on her first impressions of the Red Cross shelter in Joplin, MO. Hi - this is Wendy typing. I arrived in Joplin this afternoon and was able to visit the shelter at MSSU, get a tour (it's bigger than you imagine) and speak with one of the residents for about a half hour. He explained what he went through last Sunday evening and I was forever changed after meeting him and hearing his story. He's a brave man who's been through it - he lived a few blocks from the hospital you've been seeing on the news. Even though he had his young son to take care of, he went out to help neighbors. He's a hero in my eyes and I have the feeling I'll meet many more with similar stories at the shelter. www.redcross.org
