Gape at some pert, hip-bumping hootchy-kootchy in the 1951 Universal Picture "Little Egypt." Dancing in the title role is Rhonda Fleming, an attractive and skilled "exotica" actress who appeared in many adventure-type films of the 1950s. The real-life "Little Egypt" gained notoriety for her belly-dance performance(s) on the Midway at the 1893 World's Fair/Columbian Exposition held in Chicago, Illinois. Her actual name was Farida Mazar Spyropoulos. She was Syrian. The film "Little Egypt" dramatizes the "scandal" associated with this bit of history. The film is part frustration and part bore. Evidence: the unconvincing romance brewed between "Izora" (Fleming) and "Wayne Cravat" (Mark Stevens from, more notably, the Fox noir THE STREET WITH NO NAME); the most lethargic, pedantic courtroom scene imaginable that gracelessly gobbles up a significant chunk of screen time; and, generally speaking, the mediocre production values. The film is also part "fun factor"--and that begins and ends with a beauty like Rhonda dancing. Enjoy.
