Mataea continues telling Vincent about her past. When she gets older Rufus convinces Hojo to assign a young man named Reno to look after her. Since he is the first person Mataea's ever met that has been around her age, they become fast and very close friends. However Hojo does not let Reno see what goes on behind closed doors, like the tests, training, and mako exposure. Mataea does not understand why Reno wants to stay and work with Shinra since she hates it there so much, and feels badly because she knows one day she will have to leave him. One day, Hojo invites Rufus and Sephiroth to watch Mataea in a virtual reality training simulation. When Sephiroth enters the room however, Mataea becomes overwhelmed by an unknown force and can sense the evil within Sephiroth. Unable to control herself, she sends an enormous eruption of power right at Sephiroth, destroying the training room completely. After the incident, Mataea goes into a coma for four days while Reno waits at her side. Eventually she awakens and Reno is relieved to know she's okay.
