Following the success of Dad's Army co-creator Jimmy Perry adapted some more of his memories into another winning period-sitcom - he had been part of a Royal Artillery Concert Party in Deolali, India (the setting used in the sitcom), in 1945, and so based the episodes upon his own experiences. The characters reflected Perry's former colleagues - although, the writer indicated, the bulldog-natured Battery Sergeant Major Williams was actually less harsh than the man upon whom he was based.Good, bad or indifferent?
