Michael Stewart (August 1 1924 - September 20 1987), was an American playwright and librettist.
Stewart was born in Manhattan (New York). He attended Queens College and then the Yale School of Drama, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1953.
His early work was writing sketches for the revues The Shoestring Revue (1955), The Littlest Revue (1957), and Shoestring '57. He then joined the staff writers of Sid Caesar's television program, Your Show of Shows.
His sister is the writer Francine Pascal.
Michael Curtis "Yogi" Stewart (born April 24 1975 in Cucq-Trépied-Stella-Plage, France) is an American former NBA basketball player who last played for the Atlanta Hawks. Stewart earned his nickname "Yogi" from his brother Michael for his childhood love of Yogi Bear cartoons.
Stewart starred at Kennedy High in Sacramento, California, leading the Cougars to back-to-back city section titles in 1990 and 1991.
Stewart played four seasons at California. He averaged 4.3 ppg and 4.7 rpg in 117 games, but finishing as the Bears' all-time leading shotblocker (207). Stewart set school a school record by blocking 59 shots as a freshman in 1993-94 and holds the four best single-season totals for blocks in school history. He never missed a game, playing in all 117 games during his collegiate career and shooting .510 from the field.
At the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival, Stewart was a member of the bronze medal-winning West team.
Stewart went undrafted and was signed to a one year contract by the Kings on September 11 1997. This was a dream come true for Michael, as he served as a ballboy for the Kings in his youth. In 1997-98, he led the Kings in blocked shots and ranked second overall among NBA rookies. On January 21, 1999, Stewart was signed as a free agent by the Toronto Raptors. During the ensuing offseason, he was re-signed to a 6-year, $24 million contract by the team. Michael is now retired and enjoying life as a businessman living in central Florida.

He was the brother of John Stewart (1939-2008), a one-time member of The Kingston Trio and later a very successful singer/songwriter, and the father of Jamie Stewart, frontman of popular avant-garde group Xiu Xiu. Stewart eventually became a successful record producer, with one of his biggest successes being Billy Joel's Piano Man.
Some reports suggested that his death in 2002 was due to suicide, but his daughter has denied this in an Internet blog.
Michael Jerome Stewart of Brooklyn, NY received posthumous recognition when he died following his arrest for spray painting graffiti. His treatment while in police custody and the ensuing trials of his police captors sparked debate concerning police brutality and the responsibilities of arresting officials in handling suspects. At the time, the saga of confusion was one of the most widely publicized stories in the city’s history involving charges of police brutality.
Word of the arrest came out on September 15, 1983 as the Committee Against Racially Motivated Police Violence was holding a news conference to publicize a Congressional hearing into complaints of police abuse. Stewart had been arrested earlier that day. He died at age 25, on September 28, after 13 days in a coma.
The cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest.
