Christopher Morris (born September 5, 1965 in Bristol, England) is an English satirical comedian, writer, director, producer, actor and radio DJ.
Morris began his career in radio before moving into television. He found fame in the nineties fronting the spoof current affairs shows The Day Today and Brass Eye. Morris is known for often highly controversial yet intelligent comedy, which has brought praise and criticism in equal measure. He is reluctant to discuss his work or appear in public.
Chris Morris (born 23 May 1979) is an activist who, with Euan Sutherland, successfully challenged the British Government in the European Court of Human Rights and secured an equal age of consent for gay men.
When male homosexuality was decriminalised in England and Wales in 1967, the age of consent was set at 21. It was lowered to 18 in 1994, but Morris and Sutherland took their case to Europe to demand it be reduced further to 16, the same age as it is for heterosexuals. They invoked Articles 8 and 19 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which guarantee the right to a private life and protection from discrimination.
Their case was originally backed by the gay rights group Stonewall and later Morris formed his own organisation, YouthSpeak, which was funded by Sir Ian McKellen. YouthSpeak sent delegations of teenagers to meet MPs and the media to tell their personal stories about how an unequal age of consent affected their lives. The group also projected a laser beam onto Big Ben demanding '16 for everyone' and delivered a 25,000-strong petition to new prime minister Tony Blair when he was elected in May 1997.
Opposition to the campaign was led by Conservative peer Baroness Young and the then Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, among others.
In July 1997, the European Commission found that the existence of different ages of consent was discriminatory and that no valid grounds existed to justify that discrimination. They therefore found that the age of consent for homosexual acts should be lowered to 16. In arriving at their conclusion, the commission cited their reasoning in the previous cases, Dudgeon v. United Kingdom and Norris v. Ireland.
In response to the commission's findings, the then Home Secretary Jack Straw agreed with Sutherland and Morris that a Bill would be proposed to Parliament in the summer of 1998 to reduce the age of consent for homosexual acts to 16. The Commission approved their 'friendly settlement'.
After two defeats in the House of Lords, the law was eventually changed as part of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 2000, after the use of the Parliament Act, in November 2000.
Christopher Vernard Morris (born January 20 1966 in Atlanta, Georgia) is a retired American professional basketball player. In his 11 season (1988-1999) NBA career, the 6' 8" small forward played for the New Jersey Nets, Utah Jazz, and Phoenix Suns. He is a graduate of Atlanta's Douglass High School where his jersey has been retired and played for the Auburn University Tigers. He retired with 8,184 total points.
Morris is notorious for shattering a glass backboard during a regular season game. In 1993, at Continental Airlines Arena, New Jersey, as a member of the Nets, Morris shattered a backboard with a slam dunk. Bizarrely, in two other games that season (one of them at Continental Airlines Arena), visiting Orlando Magic rookie center Shaquille O'Neal had two thunderous dunks that caused damage to the equipment. The supporting beams snapped, causing the entire backboard and shot clock to buckle from it and fall forward.
Morris also had a career in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Chris Morris (born Newquay, England, December 24, 1963) is a former professional footballer who made his name as a defender with Celtic in Scotland and Sheffield Wednesday & Middlesbrough in England, among others. Morris also had a successful playing career with the Republic of Ireland national side, in their golden era under Jack Charlton.
