Bradley Newley (born February 18, 1985, in Lower Mitcham, South Australia) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Panionios BC of the Greek Basketball League and the ULEB Cup League. Notably, a member of the Australian team, that won the 2003 FIBA Junior World Championships in Greece, and scored 16 points against Lithuania in the final . He was also selected in the second round of the 2007 NBA Draft, 54th overall, by the Houston Rockets.
Australian Career
Brad Newley played professionally with the Townsville Crocodiles in the 2005 Australian National Basketball League. His efforts, in this breakout season, earned him the club's 'Rookie of the Year' award. In addition, he was named in the NBL's domestic All-Star team. Playing in this exhibition All-Star game he was selected as MVP. His style of game is extremley skilled, he is an excellent jump shooter and defender and has a trademark two handed dunk.
After another impressive season in the NBL, Brad choose to enter the NBA Draft in 2006. However; prior to the actual draft he withdrew his availability, and instead used this experience as a motivational tool to improve.
In the knowledge that he had to produce yet another stellar NBL season to impress NBA scouts, Newley alongside Larry Abney led to Crocs to the NBL playoffs. However, the quest for a title was extinguished by a fit, impressive and skillful Sydney Kings outfit. After the disappointment of this finals exit, Brad announced that he had signed with the Adelaide 36ers, yet he also noted, that his main focus was still being drafted into the NBA.
After numerous tryouts with various teams, Brad Newley was drafted by the Houston Rockets with pick number 54. Although he wasn't guaranteed a contract, Brad participated in the 2007 Vegas Summer League with the Rockets. Recognising that he needed to improve certain areas of his game, Newley opted to play in Greece with Panionios Athens, rather than return to Australia and play with the 36ers.
Greek Career
In the fourth matchday of the A1 Ethniki 2007-08, Newley scored 32 points on 12-of-12 shooting for Panionios in a win against A.E.K. By making 8-of-8 three-pointers, a new record was set in the Greek A1 competition . The previous mark was of 7-of-7. He was also named the MVP of that week .
National Team Experience
Newley made his senior debut with the Australian national team during the 2006 Commonwealth Games. This was a successful tournament, with the Boomers winning gold. Additionally he was selected in the Boomers squad for the 2006 World Championships. In this tournmament, despite limited game-time, he averaged 8ppg and 3rpg.
